A town's abandoned gem finds new purpose.

Overview

Prospect Park is a community green space in Shrewsbury, MA. It's made special by what lies within - a mystical set of ruins called the Garden of Sweet Remembrance. We connected with a local group dedicated to preserving the Garden and learned about their mission to get the community involved. Together, we created a campaign in hopes of galvanizing the town to contribute to the Garden's restoration.

The struggle to preserve a monument to memories.

In 1912, the beautiful Juniper Hall was built on the grounds known today as Prospect Park. The summer estate was home to John Whithall, a Worcester businessman who specialized in carpentry. He beautified his prized land with a dazzling horticultural garden that became a popular attraction in town. When Mr. Whithall passed away in 1922, his wife, Gertrude, gave a name to the green space in his honor - the Garden of Sweet Remembrance.

The estate eventually fell dormant and stayed that way until it was torn down in 1976. Today, only the scattered ruins of the Garden are left in its place. But the legacy of the land has not been forgotten just yet.

Fighting to preserve history is a local group of volunteers known as Friends of Prospect Park (FOPP). They've spent years of time and effort maintaining the Garden, always searching for ways to restore it to its former magnificence. But they need help. Their problem: how can they inspire the local community to get involved with their cause?

Reconnecting the past to its purpose with a collective vision.

Friends of Prospect Park wants to fully revitalize the Garden of Sweet Remembrance and its surrounding area. In order to fund that vision, FOPP plans to launch a memorial brick fundraiser in 2021. Donors will have the chance to purchase a brick and engrave it with a message of their choosing; their bricks will then be used to build walkways and patios in various spots throughout the Garden.

The people of FOPP understand the power of nature. Like its name suggests, the Garden of Sweet Remembrance was built to eternalize memories. That same purpose is what makes engraved memorial bricks the perfect gift to revive the Garden. This is more than a fundraiser - it is a call for a local community to come together and take pride in preserving their history.

Creating a call to community.

When we began our work with FOPP, we found a communication gap between them and the people they wanted to reach. The Garden was an amazing place, but very few people knew about it. To change that, we filmed and compiled a short story video about the space and FOPP's efforts to improve it. We take the viewer on a journey through history, from the conception of the Garden to where it stands today.

But why should anyone care? That was the question we set out to answer with our story video. We captured the beauty and tranquility of the Garden to create an emotional connection between the space and the local community. We hope the story will be an inspiring call for people to join the initiative and revive the Garden by contributing a piece of their own legacy.

Our efforts with FOPP are ongoing. We're excited to develop a website for the initiative and see how the art of storytelling will pay off when it comes time to launch FOPP's fundraising campaign.
